Euro Office launches: a major boost for genuine data sovereignty

SpaceNet AG welcomes today’s official launch of Euro Office, the new data-sovereign European open-source productivity suite. Speaking on the sidelines of the Nextcloud Summit in Munich, SpaceNet CEO Sebastian v. Bomhard emphasised: “Euro Office is another important step towards genuine independence from US hyperscalers. The solution relies on proven open-source technology and ensures from the outset that data storage and processing fully comply with European data protection regulations. This creates genuine data sovereignty and freedom of choice for businesses. For even though major US providers like to advertise their European data centres, one crucial point is often left unmentioned: even the European subsidiaries of US corporations are subject to local laws such as the Patriot Act and thus fundamentally pose a risk to European companies.”

For the founder of SpaceNet, the launch of the new suite is therefore a clear sign that there is an increasing shift in thinking regarding the assessment of the security and availability of IT infrastructures. The multi-million-euro deal with Microsoft, recently suspended by the Free State of Bavaria, is also a clear indication of this: “In a changing world with new geopolitical challenges, Europe would do well not only to question the market dominance of US corporations to date, but also to effectively reduce it through its own offerings.”

When it comes to implementation, von Bomhard recommends planning the transition to data-sovereign architectures properly in collaboration with experts: “True digital sovereignty arises from a smart strategy that takes technology, processes, security and people into account in equal measure.”

Euro Office currently focuses primarily on document processing. However, the open architecture allows, for example, data-sovereign, high-performance email infrastructures to be integrated into an environment at any time. SpaceNet has been a European pioneer in data sovereignty and independent IT environments for 30 years. With its platforms based on Nextcloud and Zimbra, the company offers high-performance alternatives to proprietary platforms such as Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Euro Office is now also part of this offering.

“We are seeing a significant and steadily growing demand for our products, particularly among small and medium-sized enterprises. This includes a data-sovereign, high-performance email infrastructure. Of course, such a transition involves a certain amount of effort, but the reward is a truly data-sovereign, future-proof and independent IT landscape. It creates real long-term value: companies gain greater control over their data, reduce strategic dependencies and strengthen their resilience,” says Sebastian v. Bomhard.
